Dental Implants

What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are placed into your jaw bone to hold a prosthetic tooth or bridge. Implants are the best option for people who have lost one or more teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or other reason for missing teeth.

When needing an implant you will be referred to a periodontal specialist for them to evaluate your bone and the area needing an implant. You’re an ideal candidate for a dental implant if:

  • You’re in good general and oral health.
  • You have adequate bone in your jaw to support the implant.
  • You have healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease.

The process is basically a three phase process that could take up to 5-8 months, which could differ depending on the person.

  • Implant surgically placed in the jawbone (the periodontist will do this)
  • The abutment is added to the implant with a temporary crown
  • The prosthetic tooth, or crown is placed.

It is possible for implants to last your lifetime as long as you keep up with your oral health.
